The church was organized by a committee from the Classis
of Bergen November 10th, 1850, with twelve charter
members: Mr. John Vreeland, Mr. J. Dunn Littell, Mrs. Julia
B. Littell, Mrs. Catherine Ostrander, Mrs. Elizabeth Pitts, Mr.
George Bell, Mrs. Susan Bell, Margaret Wallace, Mr. John
White, Mrs. Susan White, Margaret Short, Mary Cooke. The
Rev. Thomas B. Gregory was stated supply from the organization to 1854. The winter of 1851-52 a lot was purchased on
Hudson Street between Fifth and Sixth Streets, and a church
was erected on this site during 1855.
The first pastor, Rev. Charles Parker, was called in 1855 and
remained until 1858; Rev. Alexander D. Mann, D.D., 1858 to
1861 ; Rev. Matthew B. Riddle, 1862 to 1865 ; Rev. Wm. H.
Vroom, 1865 to 1867; Rev. J.K. Allen, 1868 to 1870; Rev.
Charles D. Buck, 1870 to 1874; Rev. Charles Parker, recalled,
1874 to 1878; Rev. Isaac House, 1879 to 1886; Rev. John Boyd,
1886 to 1887; Rev. Henry Mattice, 1890 to 1895. On November
2nd, 1890, the church was burned. In 1891 a lot was purchased
on Bloomfield Street between Eighth and Ninth Streets, where
the present church was erected in 1894, the congregation meeting
in a small building on part of the lot in the meantime.
The Rev. N. H. Van Arsdale supplied the pulpit during 1896,
after which the Rev. Conrad Bluhm was called and presided,
1897 to 1902; Rev. John Gilmore Addy, 1902 to 1903; Rev.
Alonzo Ranson, 1904 to 1906. On the resignation of Rev.
Alonzo Ranson, in February, 1906, a call was extended to the
present pastor, Rev. Wm. Ten Eyck Adams. He was installed
May 31st, 1906. The church, on Bloomfield Street, has a seating
capacity of about 350; has a membership of nearly 200, and
is in a flourishing condition. Sunday School has about 230
members, W.L. Paddock, Supt.
