1889 a portion of the members of the Reformed Church, on Garden and Sixth Sts., headed by the pastor, the Rev. Mr. Freund, withdrew from that congregation. These people for a short time held services in Crane's Hall, on Washington street, and later at Old Fellows' Hall. In the spring of 1890 they purchased the old Baptist Church, corner of Third and Bloomfield streets, for a house of worship. The Rev. Mr. Freund was succeeded by Rev. J.Heck, during the first year of whose pastorate the members, being born and reared Lutherans, reorganized as an Evangelical congregation. Rev. Mr. Heck served the congregation until 1898, being succeeded by Rev. N. was Rev. C. Engelder, the present pastor.
