The First Baptist Church was founded November 2, 1845. Public worship had been maintained for months previous in a school house known as "Hoboken Institute," which was occupied also by the church, until more suitable accommodations could be procured.

The constituent members were Jacob Speir, Thomas S. Field, Mary Field, Isabel Reeves, Eliza Morris, Lydia Carman, Matilda Jennings, Abram Stout, Sarah Stout, Sarah Banks, Susan Whitney, Sarah Whitney. Of these Thomas S. Field and Mrs. Applegate (nee Susan Whitney) lived to be with the church at its fiftieth anniversary, which was celebrated in the new edifice on December 16, 1895.

The first pastor was Rev. John Batey, who served the church until September 27, 1846, and was succeeded by the Rev. Josiah Hatt in the October following. The same year an attempt was made to build a meeting House on lots situated on the northwest corner of what was then Meadow and Fourth Streets in "Church Square." The walls of this building were just erected when they were blown down by a severe gale on November 23. Immediately after this a lot was purchased on the southwest corner of Washington and Third Streets and a hall (25x60) was erected, which was dedicated with appropriate religious services July 1, 1847. This house was the scene of much spiritual prosperity and was finally sold to the newly formed Presbyterian Church; a new edifice (47x70) having been built on the northwest corner of Bloomfield and Third Streets and was dedicated to the worship of God November 4, 1852.

Here the Baptists worshiped. for nearly forty years. In 1890 this church building was sold to St. John's Lutheran Church, and ground was purchased at Bloomfield and Ninth Streets and the present handsome edifice erected.

The pastors of the church have been: Rev. John Batey, Rev. Josiah Hatt, Rev. Alfred Patton, D.D., Rev. Alfred Harris, Rev. Webster R. Maul, Rev. William Goodnow, D.D.., Rev. George L. Hunt, D. D., Rev. Charles Colman, Rev. John Finch, Rev. James Hunter, Rev. Willis C. Richmond, Rev. R. Janisch Holmes.
