The records of this church having been destroyed by fire
in the house of Elder Rose, 1860, all that transpired prior
to that time can only be obtained orally from the present members.
The society was organized in 1852; the founders were Joseph
Boynton, Sarah Boynton. Andrew W. Rose, Alexander L. Cadmus,
Alida L. Stricker, Hannah P. Palmer, Sarah Palmer, Mary
Crane, Sylvina B. Beckwith, with the first regular pastor, Rev.
Isaac B. Stryker. He was installed in 1854 and resigned in 1856.
The society first purchased the building, corner of Washington
and Third Streets belonging to the First Baptist Church. Rev.
William Babbitt succeeded Mr. Stryker in 1856, and continued
until 1867. During his pastorate, in 1865, the present site was
purchased from John H. Bonn for three thousand dollars, and
the old building was sold to the German Lutheran Church. The
present building cost twenty-two thousand dollars.
The Rev. E.P. Gardner was installed in 1867, and remained
until 1871. Next came the Rev. James Marshall, installed 1872,
who remained until 1876, and was followed by Rev. John Reid,
who remained until 1879, succeeded by Rev. Addison K. Strong
in 1980, who resigned in 1882 and Was succeeded by J. B. Kugler
in 1883. After Mr. Kugler, who resigned in 1890, came the
present pastor Dr. Henry Townsend Beatty. Rev. S. B. Dod,
President First National Bank, was for a time acting pastor.
Value of church property about fifty thousand dollars; seating
capacity, three hundred and eighty; present membership, three
hundred and twenty-five. The church has two Sundays Schools
numbering in all nearly six hundred officers, teachers and scholars.
The Bethesda Presbyterian Mission is located on Second
Street between Adams and Jefferson Streets. The present Superintendent
is John D. Pearson.
