St. Francis' Church, at Third and Jefferson Streets, was
erected by the Italian Catholics of Hoboken. In April,
1888, the site, 100 x 100 was Purchased and in May, 1889, the
church was ready for occupancy. The edifice was blessed and
dedicated by Right Rev. Conroy, former Bishop of Albany.
The following year the parsonage adjoining the church was
built. The total outlay at that time was about $30,000. Rev.
Domenick Marzetti was in charge of the parish from its organization
till the time of his death. He was beloved by his people,
who deeply regretted his demise, which occurred on the 12th of
April, 1902.
Father Marzetti was succeeded by Rev. Ambrose Rheiner,
April 13, 1902, who at once began the erection of the present
large and beautiful school. Father Rheiner, was in charge of
the parish to the time of his removal in January, 1905.
The work begun on the parochial school was completed by
Rev. Seraphim Pierotti, D.D.., the present rector, who was sent
from Albany, where he was Professor of Philosophy and Theology
at the Franciscan College. During the present administration
improvements to a very noticeable degree are being made.
The interior of the church has been completely renovated, a
beautiful white marble altar railing has been erected and many
other things too numerous to mention have been completed.
The parish at the present time numbers about 2,000 souls.
The total value of church property is estimated at about $65,000.
