Prominent among the founders of the new enterprise were
Mr. G. Offenheiser and Messrs. J.H. and Claus Bahrenhurg.
The first regular deputized pastor
was the Rev. Charles Reuss,
who was appointed in 1878.
The enterprise was successful, and in 1879 the present property
was purchased and a building erected. Seating capacity two
hunched and fifty; average attendance, ninety.
In 1881 Rev. Charles Reuss was succeeded by the Rev. P.
Haendiges, in accordance with the customs of their church, who
was again succeeded by Rev. Charles Reuss.
The Sunday School, under the charge of Messrs. Offenheiser
and Bahrenburg, and later H.W. Jordan, has been very successful
and now numbers about two hundred.
In 1885 the house No. 130 Garden Street, opposite the church,
was purchased for a parsonage. Rev. Charles Reuss was succeeded
in 1887 by Rev. A. C. Gaebelein. The work continued
to prosper. A mission was started in West Hoboken, property
purchased and a church building erected.
In 1891 Rev. L. Wallon succeeded Rev. Gaebelein. All indebtedness
on the whole church property was paid off. In 1897
Rev. L. Wallon was succeeded by Rev. W.A. Stark. The parsonage
was extensively remodeled and enlarged. In 1901 Rev.
Stark was succeeded by Rev. G. Geiger who, in 1906, was succeeded
by the present pastor, Rev. C.J. Thaiss. Seven young
men have gone out from this church to prepare themselves for
the ministry and all of them are to-day successful pastors.
