In 1892 Father Francis Lehner was succeeded by Father
Unselim Auling whose pastorate was cut short by death on May
4th, 1893. Father Joseph Frewin was then placed in charge and
remained until 1896, when Father McEvoy was sent from Terre
Haute, Ind. It is due to the untiring energy of Father Mac, as he was affectionately styled, that St. Joseph's can boast of one
of the finest churches and rectories in the State of New Jersey.
On his death, which occurred on October 13, Father Nicholas
Donohue, who had been an assistant at St. Joseph's since 1993,
took charge. The property at present is valued at $110,000.
STS. PETER AND PAUL'S CHURCH.
In the year 1889 the Rt. Rev. Bishop Wigger instructed Rev.
L. Hofschneider to find it site for a German-American
Catholic church, and the present rectory and adjacent lot, at
Hudson and Fourth Streets, were bought from Mrs. E.. Stiastney
in April, 1889, for the sunk of $28,000.
A temporary chapel was erected in the large parlor of the
house, No. 404 Hudson Street, and the first service was held on
May 19th, 1889, by the first pastor, Rev. L. Hofschneider.
On December 16 of the same year the corner stone was laid
by Rt. Rev. Bishop Wigger for the present church and on July
13, 1890, the church was finished and dedicated. The school was
opened September 1, 1889, in the basement of the house and
then transferred to the new school rooms under, the present
church.
The German Catholics throughout the city were advised to
consider this church as their place of worship; but many English-speaking Catholics frequent the divine services also. The Rt.
speaking Catholics frequent the divine services also. The Rt.
Rev. Bishop O'Connor, D.D.., advised. the pastor therefore to
have some English sermons every Sunday.
Four years ago the Rt. Rev. Bishop O'Connor, D. D., thought
it expedient to purchase the corner house, No. 400 Hudson
Street, which was then for sale, and gave orders to the pastor,
Rev. L. Hofschneider, to acquire the property which was clone
at a cost of $12,000.
Later on this corner lot will serve as the basis for a larger
church.
