One of the oldest congregations in the city, St. Matthew's, was organized as a congregation February 13th, 1858, although the Rev. C. M. Wossidlo had begun his missionary activity as early as October, 1856. In 1804 a church building was purchased from the Presbyterians for the sum of $6,700. The church, now a dry goods store, was on the southwest corner of Third and Washington Streets. Rev. C. M. Wossidlo, the first minister, died March 18, 1875. He was succeeded by the Rev. Mr. Hafermann, who resigned in 1879. During his pastorate the present beautiful edifice, corner of Hudson and Eighth Streets, was started. The new church cost over $60,000 and is one of the finest in the city. The steeple is 150 feet high and has a bell and clock. The parsonage adjoins the church. In 1879 the Rev. P. Eirich was called from Albany, N. V., and served until 1890, when the present pastor, the Rev. A. Richter, took charge of the church.
