St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church is the oldest religious
organization in the city. The first service was held in 1832
with Mr. William Tryon as lay reader. A permanent organization
was effected March 2, 1835, With Rev. Robert, Davis as rector.
The wardens were John Stevens and James Gore King. The
vestrymen were Robert L. Stevens, Thomas A. Conover,
Thomas B. Gautier, M.D., John Van Boskerck, Abraham L.
Van Boskerck, Peter Ritter. Pierre L. Van Renssellaer, George
Morton, Richard F. Cook, M.D., and William Tryon.
The first permanent building was on the corner of Hudson
and Third Streets, where Busch's Hotel now stands. The land
was donated by John Stevens, Esq. In 1871 the church moved
to Hudson Street between Eighth and Ninth Streets, where it
erected the present handsome edifice at a cost of $47,000. Rectors
of the parish have been: Rev. John A. Ward, Apl. 4, 1835-1840; Rev. Mr. Cruse, 1840-1844, Rev. R.F. Burnham, 1844-1848 ; Rev. Ralph Hoyt, Rev. Mr. Parker, for a brief season;
Rev. Mr. Moore, 1849-1851 ; Rev. V, Bruce, 1851-1866; Rev. N.
Sayre Harris, 1806-1871.; Rev. Mr. Hartman, 1871-1873; Rev.
Edgar Johnson, 1873-1878; Rev. Charles L. Newbold, 1878-1883; Rev. Dr. William R. Jenvey, 1883.
The present rector, the Rev. Dr. Wm. R. Jenvey, has been in
charge of the parish for over twenty-four years, the longest pastorate
of any minister in Hoboken. The rectory adjoins the
church. There is no indebtedness upon the church. There are
over 500 communicants. The Sunday School numbers about
400. The value of the church property is fully $75,000. The
present church building was consecrated in 1888, four Bishops
and seventy-five clergymen being present.
