BY passenger and freight steamers, of the highest type, and
the connections of the companies operating them, Hoboken
is in communication with all foreign ports, and has a large coast
trade, both by steam and sailing vessels.
Its railroad communications are unsurpassed. It is the terminal
of the great Lackawanna system the wealthiest railroad for
its mileage in the world the Erie has a branch terminal at the
northern line of the city, the West Shore has a station in the
southwestern section, and the Hoboken Manufacturers' Railroad
Company, better known as the "Shore Road," connects
the city with the railroad system of the State and country.
Through the several companies controlled and operated by
all sections of the county, and through its connections to
points in Essex, Hudson and Passaic Counties.
The tunnels under the Hudson, which will be in operation this
year, connect the city with all parts of New York and also with
Long Island, ensuring the shortening of the time to the heart or
suburbs of Greater New York to a few minutes, and without the
the Public Service Corporation there is excellent trolley service to
delays which arc occasionally incident to travel by water.
The steam ferries, across the Hudson River, now operated
by the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Railroad Company,
possesses the swiftest and most commodious ferryboats of any
line in the world. There are two terminals in Hoboken
at the
terminal of the D., L. and W.R. R. and at Fourteenth street
and three in New York, namely at the foot of Barclay, Christopher
and Twenty-third Streets.
