THE Second Baptist Church was organized on April 1st,
1890, in Martha Institute Hall, Park Avenue and Sixth
Street. The original members were Dr. Bernard Clausen, Miss
Sophie Clausen, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Chancellor, Miss Mary
E. Chancellor (now Mrs. B. Clausen), Theodore B. Chancellor,

Mrs. Barker and Theo. B. Chancellor are still members.
At the time of organization a large and densely populated
district in the lower part of the city, was without a
place where the gospel was preached in the English language.
It was to supply in a measure this lack, and to furnish a church
home to the residents of that part, of our city that this church
was organized. The meetings, both those for worship and those
for sociability and entertainment, have been open to all without
charge for admittance or sittings. The work is supported by
voluntary offerings. The late pastor. Rev. John Campbell,
preached to this church from its first meeting. He was formally
called to the pastorate September 2, 1890, ordained to the ministry
November 1, 1890, and publicly installed as pastor February
9, 1891. He continued faithfully discharging his duties until
his death, February 14, 1903. On June 23, 1894, the church removed
to its present site on Willow Avenue.
Rev. L.C. Davis became pastor April 17, 1904, and continued
as such until October 1, 1905. He carried on the work earnestIy.
Rev. G.M. Dickinson, now pastor. took up the work on
January 1, 1906, and is prosecuting it vigorously. Dr. Bernard
Clausen has served the church as deacon since its organization
and as trustee since its incorporation in flay, 1902. "Theodore
B. Chancellor has been Clerk since the time of organization,
trustee since 1894 and deacon since 1894. James Coltart has
held the office of trustee since 1892 and that of deacon since
1894 and that of treasurer since 1894. Archibald B. Wilson and
Louis Molteni are also trustees. The present membership is 116.
On August 1st, 1906, the church took title to land on Monroe
Street near Second Street, where it expects to erect an edifice in
the near future.
