SINCE the establishment of the Hamburg-American steamship
line here in 1863, the growth of the foreign and domestic
coast line commerce of the city has increased at a marvelous
rate. The official statistics of four of the six lines clocking here,
namely the Hamburg-American, the North German Lloyd, the
Holland-America and the Scandinavian-American lines, show an
aggregate of 651,646 passengers and 2,381,438 tons of freight
carried in the year 19o6 to and from this port and foreign ports.
