THE Parish of Trinity was organized in the Town Hall, over
the engine house, corner of Washington and First Streets,
on Sept. 16, 1853. The first rector was the Rev. N. W. Camp,
D.D.. The first wardens were John W. Van Boskerck and Wm.
P. Wright, and the first vestrymen were A. L. Van Boskerck,
M.V. Banta, William Hindhaugh, Hazelton Walkley, James F.
Melliss, Daniel Wadsworth and Peter Ritter. First service was
held on Oct. 18, 1853.
The present beautiful edifice was begun in Oct., 1855, and
finished in Sept. 1856. Value of property, $80,000; seating capacity,
6oo; average attendance, 400. The tablet in the choir
vestry to the memory of Grace Wright was the work of the celebrated
American sculptor, Mr. Thomas Crawford, who died before
the work was finished and it was completed by Randolph
Rogers. On its way to America the vessel containing it was
shipwrecked off the Island of Corsica February 2d, 1859. After
lying six months in the Mediterranean the tablet was recovered
and reached Hoboken in August, 1860. The inscription was written by the late Bishop Doane. In 1864 the rectory and school
house were built.
The rectors have been as follows: Rev. J. W. Clark, 1855-
1858; Rev. N. S. Harris, 1858-1866 ; Rev. Frederick Fitzgerald,
1866; Rev. R.W. Howes, Jr., 1866-1874; Rev. Telfair Hodgson,
1874-1878; Rev. George C. Houghton, 1878-1897; Rev. James
Clayton Mitchell, S.T.B.., 1897 to the present time.
In 1896 a beautiful baptistery was built in memory of John
Stevens, Esq. Sunday school numbers over 400 scholars.
There is a choir of eighteen adult and eighteen junior choristers,
and there are several societies connected with the church.
